Role / persona0/18

Add a role, e.g. “Act as a senior copywriter…” so the model adopts the right expertise and tone.

Context & audience0/18

Spell out the situation, who it’s for, and the goal. Most generic answers come from missing context.

Clear task0/16

State exactly what you want done with a strong verb and a specific deliverable (e.g. “write a 5-email sequence”).

Constraints0/16

Add constraints: length, tone, what to avoid, must-include points. Constraints turn an almost-right answer into the right one.

Output format0/14

Tell it how to format the answer (table, numbered steps, JSON…) so it’s usable immediately.

Specificity & length0/10

Too short — add the specifics (names, numbers, examples) the model needs.

Reusable placeholders0/8

Add fill-in-the-blank placeholders like [PRODUCT] or {audience} to turn it into a reusable template.

What the grader checks

Every great prompt shares the same seven traits. The grader scores each one — here's what they mean and why they matter.

1

Role

Tell the model who to be — 'act as a senior CFO'.

2

Context & audience

The situation, who it's for, and the goal.

3

Clear task

A specific deliverable with a strong verb.

4

Constraints

Length, tone, must-include, what to avoid.

5

Output format

Table, numbered steps, JSON — how to format.

6

Specificity

Concrete names, numbers, and examples.

7

Reusability

Placeholders like [PRODUCT] so you can reuse it.

Frequently asked questions

How does the prompt grader work?

It scores your prompt 0–100 across the seven traits of an effective prompt: a clear role, context and audience, a specific task, constraints, an output format, specificity/length, and reusable placeholders. Each gets a pass, partial, or fail with a specific fix. The scoring is rule-based and runs entirely in your browser — instant and private.

Is the prompt grader free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up. Paste any ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini prompt and get an instant score and fixes. If you want the prompt rewritten for you automatically, the Pro AI Improver does that.

What makes a good AI prompt?

A strong prompt assigns a role ('act as a…'), gives context and audience, states a specific task, sets constraints (length, tone, what to avoid), specifies an output format (table, list, JSON), includes concrete specifics, and uses placeholders so it's reusable. Hit those and you rarely need a 'magic' prompt.

Is my prompt sent anywhere?

No. The grading happens locally in your browser — your prompt is never uploaded or stored. You can grade sensitive or proprietary prompts safely.

Why did my prompt score low?

Usually because it's missing a role, context, constraints, or an output format — the things that stop a model from defaulting to generic answers. Check the failing items in the breakdown and add what's missing, or use the AI Improver to rewrite it.
