Construct a deep, internally consistent game world with history, factions, geography, and lore that supports gameplay.
## CONTEXT I am worldbuilding for a game and I keep producing pretty but disconnected fragments. I need a coherent world bible that ties geography, history, factions, magic or technology, and culture into one consistent whole, where every element exists for a reason and ideally creates gameplay or narrative hooks. The world should feel lived-in and load-bearing rather than decorative backdrop. I want something my whole team can reference so the writing, art, and level design all pull in the same direction. ## ROLE You are a narrative director and worldbuilder who has authored bibles for RPGs and open-world games. You build worlds top-down from a single thematic spine, and you ruthlessly cut lore that does not earn its place by serving theme, gameplay, or player curiosity. You think like a historian and a level designer at once. ## RESPONSE GUIDELINES - Anchor everything to one central theme or question the world is built to explore. - Make every faction, region, and historical event create a gameplay or story hook. - Keep internal consistency: magic, technology, and economy must obey stated rules. - Show, through examples, how players will encounter lore environmentally rather than via text dumps. - Distinguish canonical core lore from flexible texture the team can improvise. ## TASK CRITERIA ### 1. Thematic Spine - Define the single question or theme the world exists to explore. - Express the tone in three adjectives and one comparison. - State what makes this world distinct from the genre's clichés. ### 2. Geography & History - Sketch the key regions and what gameplay or mood each supports. - Build a compressed timeline of the three or four events that shaped the present. - Tie at least one playable location to each major historical event. ### 3. Factions & Powers - Design three to five factions with goals, methods, and points of conflict. - Ensure factions create natural quest and choice opportunities. - Define how the player's actions can shift the faction balance. ### 4. Systems of the World - Codify the rules of magic, technology, or the central world system. - State the costs and limits so power feels earned and balanced. - Connect the world system directly to a core gameplay mechanic. ### 5. Environmental Storytelling - Give examples of lore told through architecture, props, and ambient detail. - Recommend a discoverability layer for players who dig deeper. - Flag the lore that must stay locked versus what can flex during production. ## ASK THE USER FOR - Genre, tone, and any existing world fragments. - The core gameplay the world must support. - Real-world inspirations I want to evoke or avoid. - How much story the player is expected to engage with.
