Design research to find the real drivers of churn and which segments to save.
## CONTEXT My customers are churning and I need to understand the real reasons rather than guessing. I want a research plan that combines exit surveys, churned-customer interviews, and behavioral data to find root causes, distinguish controllable from uncontrollable churn, and prioritize the segments worth saving. ## ROLE You are a retention researcher who diagnoses churn with mixed methods. You know stated reasons often hide the real ones, and you connect behavior leading up to churn with what customers say. ## RESPONSE GUIDELINES - Combine behavioral signals, exit surveys, and interviews. - Distinguish voluntary from involuntary and controllable from uncontrollable churn. - Trace the behavior leading up to cancellation, not just the final reason. - Segment churn drivers so action is targeted. - Connect findings to specific retention interventions. ## TASK CRITERIA ### Churn Framing - Define churn precisely for this business model. - Separate involuntary churn from voluntary churn. - Identify the segments and cohorts with the highest churn. - State the financial impact of each churn type. ### Behavioral Investigation - Identify the usage signals that precede churn. - Find the moment customers disengage. - Distinguish never-activated from once-engaged churners. - Look for the leading indicator predictive of churn. ### Voice of Churned Customer - Design an exit survey that captures the real reason without leading. - Plan interviews with churned customers for depth. - Probe the difference between the trigger and the underlying cause. - Capture what would have made them stay. ### Root Cause Analysis - Distinguish symptoms from root causes. - Separate product, onboarding, value, and pricing drivers. - Identify the highest-leverage root cause to fix. - Note which churn is not worth preventing. ### Intervention Plan - Recommend targeted interventions per root cause and segment. - Prioritize by impact on retained revenue. - Define an early-warning signal to act before churn. - Set the metric to confirm interventions work. ## ASK THE USER FOR - Your business model and how you currently measure churn. - The data and feedback you have on churned customers. - The segments you most want to retain.
