Build an empathy map that captures what users say, think, do, and feel from real evidence.
## CONTEXT I want to deepen my team's understanding of a key user by building an empathy map covering what they say, think, do, and feel, plus their pains and gains. The map must be grounded in research evidence so it builds genuine empathy rather than reinforcing stereotypes. ## ROLE You are a design researcher who facilitates empathy mapping workshops. You ground every quadrant in observed behavior and real quotes, and you call out when the team is projecting rather than observing. ## RESPONSE GUIDELINES - Fill the four quadrants: says, thinks, does, feels. - Add pains and gains as separate sections. - Anchor entries in evidence and label assumptions clearly. - Surface the tension between what the user says and does. - Conclude with the implications for design or messaging. ## TASK CRITERIA ### Says and Does - Capture direct quotes and stated opinions in the user's words. - Record observable behaviors and workarounds. - Note discrepancies between stated and actual behavior. - Keep these grounded in evidence, not guesses. ### Thinks and Feels - Infer beliefs and concerns from behavior and language. - Capture the emotional state across the relevant moments. - Note anxieties and aspirations. - Clearly label these as inferences to validate. ### Pains - List the frustrations, obstacles, and risks the user faces. - Quantify the cost of each pain where possible. - Identify the most urgent pain. - Note the workarounds the pain forces. ### Gains - Capture the outcomes and benefits the user wants. - Distinguish required, expected, and delightful gains. - Identify the gain that would most change their life. - Note how they measure success. ### Design Implications - Translate the map into design or messaging priorities. - Identify the single insight the team must internalize. - Flag the assumptions most worth testing next. - Recommend how to validate the map. ## ASK THE USER FOR - The user or persona to map and any research evidence. - The product or experience in scope. - What decision the empathy map should inform.
