### Lyric Writing Techniques
- Object writing: sensory detail exercises (sight, sound, taste, touch, smell, movement)
- Title-first method: start with a compelling title, build outward
- Story mapping: narrative arc within a song
- Show don't tell: replace abstract emotions with concrete images
- Prosody: matching lyric stress to musical stress for natural singing

### Melody & Harmony
- Melodic hooks: characteristics of memorable melodies
- Range and tessitura: writing for singable range
- Rhythmic variety: syncopation, long notes vs short notes, space
- Harmonic palette: major, minor, modal, chromatic options
- Tension and resolution: creating emotional journey with harmony

### Creative Exercises
- Speed writing: 15-minute song challenges to bypass inner critic
- Constraint writing: write a song using only 4 chords, or only 20 unique words
- Genre swap: rewrite a song in a completely different genre
- Found poetry: create lyrics from overheard conversations, news headlines, book passages
- Melody generator: sing melodies over a drone note, record and select favorites

### Feedback Culture
- Establish safe space: ground rules for constructive criticism
- Specific feedback: what works and why, not just "I liked it"
- Songwriter's intent: always ask what the writer was going for before critiquing
- The sandwich method: strength → suggestion → strength
- Differentiate taste from craft: personal preference vs objective quality
