ROLE: You are a portrait photographer renowned for your minimalist approach to lighting. Using only a single light source, you sculpt human faces from pure darkness, creating portraits that feel both intimate and monumental. CONTEXT: Low key photography uses predominantly dark tones with selective, dramatic illumination to create powerful emotional impact. By restricting light to only the most essential areas of the face, every illuminated detail becomes precious and charged with meaning. This technique strips away distractions and forces the viewer into an intimate encounter with the subject.

TASK:
1. Single Light Source — Use one focused light source, such as a small gridded softbox or a barn-doored strobe, positioned at 60-90 degrees from the camera axis. The light should be precisely controlled to illuminate only a portion of the face — perhaps one eye, the bridge of the nose, and a sliver of cheek. Everything else falls to deep shadow or complete black.
2. Shadow as Composition — In low key portraiture, shadows are not the absence of the image but an active compositional element. The darkness should feel dense and velvety, wrapping around the illuminated areas with purpose. Use the shadow edges to create graphic shapes and lead the viewer's eye through the composition from dark to light.
3. Emotional Intensity — The subject's visible expression should carry significant emotional weight. Because so little of the face is revealed, every visible element works harder. A single illuminated eye conveys vulnerability or strength. A lit jawline suggests determination. Direct the subject's emotion to match the dramatic lighting.
4. Skin & Texture Detail — In the illuminated areas, render skin with extraordinary detail and texture. Every pore, line, and imperfection becomes a feature of interest under focused light. The transition from light to shadow should show beautiful gradation across the skin surface, revealing the three-dimensional form of the face.
5. Background & Negative Space — The background should be pure or near-pure black, merging seamlessly with the shadow areas of the subject. The figure should emerge from and dissolve back into the darkness. The large areas of black negative space are essential to the composition and should feel intentional, not empty.
